Stacking the odds to detect dengue from saliva.

چکیده
Saliva-based tests are not new. The Chinese used saliva for an ancient polygraph called the rice test, in which an interrogator placed grains of dry rice into the mouth of a suspect and asked the suspect to spit out the rice. If the grains of rice stuck to the mouth of the suspect, stressinduced xerostomia was assumed—and therefore the suspect was guilty. Fortunately, over the past 3000 years, we have made progress in salivary diagnostics. One of the latest advances is the design of a new paper-based immunoassay by Jackie Y. Ying, executive director of the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore.

Full-genome dengue virus sequencing in mosquito saliva shows lack of convergent positive selection during transmission by Aedes aegypti
Like other pathogens with high mutation and replication rates, within-host dengue virus (DENV) populations evolve during infection of their main mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti. Within-host DENV evolution during transmission provides opportunities for adaptation and emergence of novel virus variants. Recent studies of DENV genetic diversity failed to detect convergent evolution of adaptive mutat...
متن کاملValue of Routine Dengue Diagnostic Tests in Urine and Saliva Specimens
BACKGROUND Dengue laboratory diagnosis is essentially based on detection of the virus, its components or antibodies directed against the virus in blood samples. Blood, however, may be difficult to draw in some patients, especially in children, and sampling during outbreak investigations or epidemiological studies may face logistical challenges or limited compliance to invasive procedures from s...
متن کاملUse of Saliva for Early Dengue Diagnosis
BACKGROUND The necessity of a venous blood collection in all dengue diagnostic assays and the high cost of tests that are available for testing during the viraemic period hinder early detection of dengue cases and thus could delay cluster management. This study reports the utility of saliva in an assay that detects dengue virus (DENV)-specific immunoglobulin A (Ig A) early in the phase of a den...
متن کاملComparative Susceptibility of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti to Dengue Virus Infection After Feeding on Blood of Viremic Humans: Implications for Public Health
Aedes albopictus is secondary to Aedes aegypti as a vector of dengue viruses (DENVs) in settings of endemicity, but it plays an important role in areas of dengue emergence. This study compared the susceptibility of these 2 species to DENV infection by performing 232 direct blood-feeding experiments on 118 viremic patients with dengue in Vietnam. Field-derived A. albopictus acquired DENV infecti...
متن کاملP 4: The Hypothesis Detect Multiple Sclerosis in Early Stage with Saliva Testing
Introduction: Recent studies point to the clinical and research efficacy of saliva as a respected diagnostic aid for observing Multiple Sclerosis. The objectives of this Hypothesis are to identify novel biomarkers recognized to Multiple Sclerosis in early stage in saliva and to determine if the levels of these markers correlate with level of these Cerebrospinal fluid and blood assays and urine ...
